Tour Scotland on a Literary Journey with the Authors Guild Foundation.

Explore the epic history and poetic charm of Scotland on a literary excursion guided by storytellers, folklorists, ethnologists, and local experts. The Authors Guild Foundation has arranged an eight-day trip to Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Perthshire with an itinerary customized for writers and book lovers.

While taking in Scotland’s verdant landscapes and beautiful castles, we will also enjoy engaging talks and tours of the country’s historical roots and thriving literature. Highlights include the old haunts of Robert Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson, the settings of Ian Rankin’s novels and Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, and scenic landmarks like Blackness Castle and Loch Leven.

Authors Guild Foundation Literary Journeys provide a shared experience with fellow literary people and exclusive access to meet with local authors, librarians, and historians. Join us on this trip to support the Foundation’s efforts and find inspiration in Scotland’s literary culture.

Canongate and the Royal Mile: Guided by actors portraying Robert Burns and R.L. Stevenson, we will walk the fabled streets of Old Town Edinburgh, home to the Writer’s Museum and the Queen’s residence at Holyrood Palace.

Traditional Storytellers: Gain cultural context and hear delightful tales when we meet with a Borders storyteller, a Scots ethnologist, and several local poets and writers.

Scottish Castles: Sightseeing includes Blackness Castle (the castle shaped like a ship, recently featured as Fort William in Outlander), Drummond Castle and its 17th-century formal gardens, and Loch Leven Castle where Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned.

Innerpeffray Library: Lara Haggerty, Keeper of Books, will give us a tour of Scotland’s oldest public library and allow us a behind-the-scenes look at rare books in the collection.

Historic Pubs & Inns: Enjoy free time with perfect recommendations on where to shop, dine, and relax—such as the Oxford Bar featured in Rankin’s Rebus novels.

Highland Perthshire: On a guided day trip, we’ll enter the Highlands region, including Loch Tay, Dunkeld, and a bookstore in a watermill in Aberfeldy.

And More Art & Culture: Spend a day at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, tour the best neighborhoods for shopping, dining, and live music, and enjoy optional activities such as “A Play, A Pie, and A Pint” lunch theater.
