Buff Kavelman founded Kavelman Group Philanthropic Advisors (TKG) to build the capacity of funders and nonprofit leaders to serve their missions. TKG provides strategic advisory services that help clients strengthen grantmaking strategies, launch new initiatives, and build effective partnerships.
TKG’s individual and institutional clients engage in work that spans 26 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. The firm serves nonprofit leaders in many fields, including arts and culture, education, environmental conservation, public health, social justice, and global understanding.
With over 25 years of experience as a funder, board member and nonprofit executive, Buff has a balanced perspective on philanthropy. Before establishing TKG in 2007, she held senior positions at the American Academy in Rome, the Smithsonian and Columbia, where she served as Executive Director of University Programs and Events in the President’s office and as a member of the senior management team in Development and Alumni Relations.
Buff has served on many nonprofit boards and grantmaking panels, including the Pew Trust’s Cultural Management Program, the J.M. Kaplan Fund’s Innovation Prize, the Women’s Media Center and the New York Philanthropic Advisors Network. She serves on Philanthropy New York’s Membership and International Grantmaking Committees, and on the selection panel for the New York Community Trust’s Nonprofit Excellence Awards.
She holds an M.S. from Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture, and was appointed Humanities Fellow at International House. She received a B.A. in Art History with high distinction and honors from the University of Michigan, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
