Member Spotlight: Jacqueline Jules

Why is writing important to you and why do you think it’s an important medium for the world? Writing is my way of making sense of my emotions in a changing, troubled world.

What are your tried and tested remedies to cure writer’s block? Just keep typing. If I am blocked, I write notes about why I chose this topic, why I want to write about it, and what I want to say in the next section. Just keep typing. The right words in the right order will eventually arrive.

What is your favorite time to write? I do my best to write throughout the day and around any planned activities. I also try to put in an hour or two in the evenings.

What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received and would like to impart to other writers? “All you have to do is touch the meaning, you don’t have to hammer it.” This advice was given to me second hand but I believe it is attributed to WC Williams.

What excites you most about being a writer in today’s age? Writing is legacy for me. I am at a point in my life when I am concerned about what I will leave behind. Writing gives me the opportunity to try to leave a small mark.

Jacqueline Jules’s The Generous Fish, illustrated by Frances Tyrrell, is out now with Wisdom Tales.
