As you may have heard, arts funding isn’t the only item on the chopping block in the President’s proposed FY2018 budget. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent agency charged with supporting libraries and museums in the U.S., is allotted $23 million in administrative expenses to begin closing out operations. Also in jeopardy are programs covered by the Library Services and Technology Act and the Innovative Approaches to Literacy Program.
Healthy libraries nurture authors and develop readers; they are a fundamental part of a functioning publishing ecosystem. As both authors and citizens, we can’t afford to do without them. So we wrote last week to the Senate and House Subcommittees who oversee IMLS to underscore the importance of libraries to writers and to the country as a whole.
