Changes to Group Registration for Unpublished Works

U.S. Copyright Office to Stop Accepting Paper Applications for Group Registration for Unpublished Works (“GRUW”)

Starting March 15, 2020, the Copyright Office will stop accepting applications for unpublished collections on the standard application or through any other paper-based forms. Going forward, the office will only review applications for group registration of unpublished works that are submitted through its online form.

The Copyright Office implemented a new administrative rule last year that allows for the registration of up to ten unpublished works using a single registration form and $55 filing fee. The new online “GRUW” application form further streamlines the process.

To acclimate users to the new form and procedure, the office recently released a video tutorial that guides prospective registrants through the steps.
