Call Upon the Missouri Legislature to Reject Censorship Bill

The Authors Guild and other members of the National Coalition Against Censorship call on the Missouri state legislature to reject a recently introduced bill that threatens librarians with fines and imprisonment for allowing minors to read material that offends the personal moral standards of some individuals in the community. The bill requires libraries to create committees of adults that will decide what books local children can and cannot read. In addition, it bans library and school employees who are trained in child literacy from becoming members of the committees. If enacted, the law would deal a serious blow to the First Amendment rights of librarians and readers. We strongly urge Missouri legislators to reject House Bill 2044.
