Fiction Contests

PEN America Free Expression Essay Competition
Eligibility: high school and college students
Prize: $4,000 for college essayists; $3,000 for high school essayists

Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant
Eligibility: Creative nonfiction writers under contract with a traditional publisher in the UK, US, or Canada
Prize: $40,000

Eligibility: Poets who have not had a full-length book of poetry published previously

Translation Contests
Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize
Eligibility: Translators with book-length translations Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Sanskrit, Tamil, Thai, or Vietnamese into English poetry or source texts from Zen Buddhism in 2021
Prize: $6,000

Italian Prose in Translation Award (IPTA)
Eligibility: Translators with books of fiction or literary non-fiction translated from Italian into English in 2021
Prize: $5,000

ALTA Travel Fellowship
Eligibility: Emerging translators
Prize: $500-$1,000 to assist in travel to the annual ALTA conference

American Library in Paris Visiting Fellowship
Eligibility: Writers working on a book project, fiction or non-fiction, that contributes to cross-cultural discourse.
Prize: $5,000 + opportunity to pursue a creative project in Paris for a month while participating in the life of the American Library
Entry Fee: €30

Marguerite and Lamar Fellowship for Writers
Eligibility: All writers
Prize: $5,000 + residency in Carson McCullers’s childhood home
