Affordable Care Act and Health Insurance Update as of September 29. 2013

TEIGIT, our health care insurance agency, has notified us that Oxford will terminate its New York “sole proprietor” health insurance policies effective January 1, 2014. TEIGIT will still offer CIGNA dental plans to Authors Guild members:

Health insurance will be available to you through new a health insurance marketplace that is being created under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Basics on the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare):

Enrollment and coverage dates: Enrollment starts on October 1 for coverage effective January 1, 2014. Enrollment for this first year will stay open until the end of March 2014.

Availability: The new insurance marketplaces, or “exchanges,” will be available in every state.

Assistance for premium costs: For those with incomes under specified thresholds, federal tax credits will be available to help cover the costs of premiums.

Choices will vary by states: These will be state-based exchanges. As a result, choices will vary depending on where you live. The federal Health and Human Services agency has posted an interactive map that provides some useful information. It also provides a link to state exchanges and websites. Some of these – including New York and California – have posted state specific information. This will be available for all states in September. See the interactive map here:

We strongly recommend that you evaluate new health insurance choices through official federal and state websites to avoid scam artists and fraudulent plans.

More Information Coming

Cathy Schoen, Senior Vice President at the Commonwealth Fund, held a phone seminar for Authors Guild members on August 27th to review the new insurance choices under the Affordable Care Act. We will have a transcript of that seminar for distribution soon and may offer another seminar with Cathy. We’ll keep you updated as more information about health insurance options becomes available. If you have any questions, please send them to and we’ll do our best to answer them or direct them to a person who can.
