This week’s batch of contests are for poets and fiction writers and include some hefty cash prizes. Deadlines range from November 15-30.

The University of North Texas is seeking submissions for its annual Rilke Prize, which awards a book that demonstrates exceptional artistry and vision written by a mid-career poet and published in the preceding year. Entrants must have published at least two previous books of poetry and be citizens or legal residents of the United States. Eligible books must have been published between November 1, 2012 and October 31, 2013 and may be submitted by publishers or poets themselves. The winner will receive $10,000 and will travel to Texas to give readings at UNT and at The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture on April 8th and 9th, 2014. Deadline: November 30, 2013. The Story Prize honors the author of an outstanding collection of short fiction. Eligible books must be written in English and first published in the United States during a calendar year. Books must be published from July through December (books published from January through June were due in July). The winner will receive $20,000 and two runners up will receive $5,000 each. The winner will be presented with the award at a ceremony at the New School’s Tishman Auditorium in March 2014, where the three finalists will read from their books and discuss their work on-stage. The Walt Whitman Award is given to honor a poet’s first book. Contestants must be citizens of the United States who have neither published, nor committed to publish, a volume of poetry 40 pages or more in length. Manuscript entries must be between 50 and 100 pages. The winner will receive $5,000, a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center, and publication by Louisiana State University Press. The Writer’s Digest Short Short Story Competition is currently open for submissions. Stories must not exceed 1,500 words. The winner will receive $3,000, publication in Writer’s Digest, and a paid trip to the Writer’s Digest Conference in New York City. The second place winner will receive $1,500 and publication in Writer’s Digest. The third place winner will receive $500 and publication in Writer’s Digest. All three will also receive copies of the 14th Annual Writer’s Digest Short Short Story Competition Collection, the 2014 Novel & Short Story Writer’s Market, and the 2014 Guide to Literary Agents.
